Everglades (West-Side Story)

This morning we headed for Shark Valley, a part of the Everglades National Park. We took a spectacular, 14-mile, narrated 2-hour tram ride through the park. Gators lined the roadway and we saw many birds. Highlights were a sighting of baby gators and a nest of baby anhingas (birds). We'd packed a sandwich lunch and in the afternoon drove to Everglades City. The old Rod and Gun Club, built in 1864, was absolutely charming. Farther south, in Chokoloskee, we visited the old Smallwood Store, site of the (in)famous Killing of Mr. Watson. The day had a spectacular ending when we passed a couple of guys hefting a just-caught python into their truck. I yelled out the window, "Where'd it come from?" "Over there," they hollered back, pointing to the other side of the 2-lane road. Quite a day!
