It’s been quite a day! We took a short hike this morning with Brian, Finn and the dogs, had lunch at Panera and left Westminster about 1:30. Nebraska is not exactly full of campgrounds, but Eagle Canyon Hideaway, just west of Ogallala on Lake McConaughy, sounded great, from the description in our Passport America campground guide.
There was a note about a rough road going into the campground. Route 26 was fine, but we opted out of the first turnoff to the lake. The second turnoff looked more promising. We thought we had good directions from our GPS and the campground guide. Wrong. After a couple of U-turns on washboard roads, we decided to give it up and go on to Ogallala. On our way back to Rt. 26, we saw the campground sign that we’d missed on the way in. Maybe we’d find Eagle Canyon after all!
Six more miles of washboard road, and we DID find the campground. We got set up, bought a few supplies for breakfast, and settled in to watch the dark clouds and lightning over the north shore of the lake.
We have WiFi at our site and have been glued to Weather Underground for the last 90 minutes. The campground host came around to tell us that we’re under a tornado watch until 2 AM. High winds about 30 minutes ago and heavy rain right now. Hail on the way? The back door to the office will be left open, and there is a basement in the building. I think it will be a restless night for us.
Camping is always an adventure!
