Chincoteague '08

I retired in June and think it's about time to re-start this blog!

In June, Garrett and I, along with his friend Matthew and his grandmother, went to an overnight at Camp Bethel, near Roanoke. It was unbelievably hot, but the boys had a great time and want to go back next year. Not so sure the grandmas are ready for that ......

As we have for several years, we took the Aliner to Chincoteague in August to overlap the end of the Knobls' trip (Abbie, Geoff, Garrett and Kyle). We had a Sunday hot dog supper at Maddox Campground before the Ks left on Monday morning. At 3, Kyle's still to little to stay

with us, but we moved Garrett and his stuff into the Aliner. We had all the usual good times: crabbing, ranger campfire, "Marsh Mud" ice cream at the Island Creamery, mini golf, beach swimming and marsh walking. It was a banner week for Garrett. He'd learned to swim the previous week, and during the days with us he learned to ride his bike WITHOUT training wheels and read his first book, Good Night Biscuit.

On Friday, we drove to Mexico PA for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Aliner Rally, bringing Garrett along. As we approached the campground, a motorist motioned us over and told us we had a bad tire on the trailer. Sure enough, one tire (only 15 months old with 6,500 miles) had lost about 30% of its tread. We limped into the campground, grateful that RV technicians would be there on Sat. to replace our tires. For two days of the rally, all Garrett did was ride his bike up and down the campground roads. He had a ball. Adding to his good time was the door prize he won at our rally dinner - giant "Pirates of the Caribbean" posters and colored markers. Still, he was glad to get home on Sunday night.
