Outrunning Kyle

We woke Saturday morning (9/27) to rain. The ferry didn't leave til 11:30, so took our time getting up. By the time we were ready to fold the camper, the drizzle had quit. The 90-minute ride was rainy and foggy, but we did get to see 2 humpback whales on the way past Grand Manan. Flukes and spout! Our drive from Blacks Harbor to St. Martins took us past the Digby ferry terminal in Saint John, where we picked up information. We had nasty rain all the way to St. Martins. This wasn't Hurricane (or, rather, Tropical Storm) Kyle, but a low that preceded it. We chose a sheltered spot at the Century Farm Campground and set up in a light drizzle. That site had only 15 amp service, and when we found we had left our adaptor at home, I had to shell out for one from the local Irving station. In getting stuff out for supper, I discovered a good deal of water in the front door-side corner. It's leaked there before, and always when we were driving in hard rain. Supper was delayed while I mopped up. After I did laundry, we rented the DVD "Charlie Wilson's War" from the Irving station. Great movie, and helped relieve our unease about the storm on the way. It rained in the night, but quit by morning.

Sunday was rainy and overcast, and considering that Tropical Storm Kyle was on the way, with Saint John predicted to receive a direct hit, we decided we should not be camped right on the bay. Higher ground seemed like a good idea, even though it meant cancelling our planned visit to the Fundy Trail and Park. The rain let up and we broke camp. We were in Moncton NB by 2:00 and found a good "campsite" at a Comfort Inn. Ah, civilization!

We found out that Elton John was in town for a concert, but it was sold out. So we went to Shediac, intending to have a lobster supper. Could not find a lobster shack anywhere, so settled for steak. So much for the "lobster capital of the world". In the evening, we tried to see Moncton's Tidal Bore, thinking that the wind and rain would make it more evident. Wrong. In the morning, after our free Comfort Inn breakfast, we did get to see the Bore. Interesting, but not impressive. TS Kyle wasn't impressive, either. We probably could have stayed in St. Martins, after all. By 11:00 we were checked out, had hooked up the camper, and were on our way.
